About

Live Currency Conversion: Exchange Rates, Bid/Ask Spreads, and Precision

Currency exchange rates are determined in the foreign exchange (forex) market, the world's largest financial market processing over $7 trillion in daily volume. The 'spot rate' is the current market price for immediate currency exchange. Exchange rates are quoted as pairs — EUR/USD 1.0850 means one euro buys 1.0850 US dollars. Rates fluctuate continuously during market hours based on macroeconomic data releases, central bank policy changes, geopolitical events, and supply/demand flow.

Major currency pairs (EUR/USD, USD/JPY, GBP/USD, USD/CHF) have the tightest spreads and highest liquidity. Minor pairs (non-USD pairs like EUR/GBP) and exotic pairs (currencies of emerging or smaller economies) have wider spreads and more volatility. For precise financial calculations, always verify rates with the financial institution executing the actual transaction, as interbank rates don't include retail markup.

Our converter fetches rates from a live exchange rate API updated at regular intervals. The rates are mid-market rates (midpoint between buy and sell prices) — suitable for reference and calculation purposes. They don't represent actual transaction rates, which include bank or exchange service spreads typically ranging from 0.5% to 3%.
