PDF Metadata: Document Info Dictionary and XMP Streams
PDF documents carry two parallel metadata systems: the Document Information Dictionary (a simple key-value structure in the PDF trailer) and XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) metadata embedded as an XML stream. Standard Document Info fields include Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator (the authoring application), Producer (the PDF creation software), and creation/modification timestamps.
XMP metadata is a richer, extensible XML format that can carry all Document Info fields plus additional properties from registered namespaces: Dublin Core (dc:), PDF (pdf:), XMP basic (xmp:), rights management (xmpRights:), and media management (xmpMM:). Adobe Acrobat and most professional PDF tools write metadata to both systems and keep them synchronized; some tools only write one or neither.
Metadata has real practical implications. Document title and keywords influence how PDFs are indexed by search engines and document management systems. Author and creation date are recorded in version control systems and audit trails. Metadata like 'Creator: Microsoft Word 16.0' reveals what software created the document — sometimes an undesired disclosure in sensitive submissions. Our tool lets you inspect all existing metadata and update or clear any field.
Privacy Implications of PDF Metadata in Sensitive Documents
PDF metadata often contains information that document authors don't intend to disclose. The Creator field records the original authoring application and sometimes the username. Revision history metadata can reveal how many times a document was edited. XMP rights management fields may contain internal asset IDs or licensing terms. In legal discovery, journalistic source protection, and procurement processes, metadata disclosure has caused real-world problems. Our PDF Metadata tool lets you inspect all embedded metadata properties and selectively clear or replace values before sharing sensitive documents externally.
Add title and keywords for search indexing
Set accurate PDF metadata so document management systems and search engines index and surface the file correctly.
Remove authoring software metadata before submission
Clear Creator and Producer fields that reveal internal tools before submitting documents to external parties.
Update author on inherited documents
Correct or update author metadata on documents that have changed ownership or custodian since creation.
Audit document metadata for compliance
Inspect metadata fields to verify compliance with document management policies before archiving.
- 1
Upload the PDF to inspect
Select your PDF and the tool will immediately parse and display all Document Info Dictionary and XMP metadata fields found in the file.
- 2
Review existing metadata
Examine all current metadata values — title, author, keywords, dates, creator application, and any extended XMP properties present in the file.
- 3
Edit or clear fields
Modify any metadata field by typing new values, or clear fields you want to remove by leaving them blank. Changes are staged before being written.
- 4
Save and download
Click Save Metadata to write all changes to both the Document Info Dictionary and XMP stream, then download the updated PDF.
Full Document Info field editing
Read and write all standard fields: Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator, Producer, and creation/modification dates.
XMP stream parsing and editing
Parses XMP XML metadata streams in addition to the Document Info Dictionary so you see the complete metadata picture.
Synchronized output
Saves changes to both metadata systems simultaneously, keeping Document Info and XMP in sync as required by PDF specification.
Privacy-safe local processing
All metadata is read and written in your browser. Sensitive metadata contents are never transmitted to external servers.
