About

Electronic Signatures on PDFs: Draw, Type, or Upload

An electronic signature is any digital method of indicating intent to sign — fundamentally different from a PDF digital signature, which is cryptographic. Electronic signatures include drawn signatures (capturing the visual of your handwritten signature), typed signatures (your name in a stylized font), and uploaded images (a scan of your physical signature). While these don't provide the same cryptographic tamper-evidence as digital signatures, they are legally recognized under the US ESIGN Act, EU eIDAS simple electronic signature tier, and equivalent legislation in most countries when the signing context provides adequate identity and intent evidence.

For most everyday signing needs — NDAs, rental agreements, authorization forms, internal approvals — an electronic signature image embedded in a PDF is entirely sufficient. Organizations requiring higher assurance can pair electronic signatures with email audit trails, IP address logging, and timestamping.

Our tool lets you create a signature three ways: draw using a mouse or touchscreen, type your name and select from signature-style fonts, or upload an existing PNG signature image. The signature is then positioned and sized on the PDF page as an image annotation, and the file is saved locally.
