About

WHOIS Protocol: Domain Registration Data and RDAP Successor

WHOIS is a query-response protocol (RFC 3912) used to retrieve registration records for internet resources — domain names, IP address blocks, and ASNs. For domain names, WHOIS records are maintained by domain registrars and registries, containing information about the registered domain: registrant contact data (name, organization, address, phone, email), registration and expiration dates, registrar identity, name servers, domain status codes (clientTransferProhibited, serverHold, etc.), and DNSSEC signing status.

Privacy regulations have significantly changed WHOIS availability. Since GDPR enforcement in 2018, most WHOIS records for .com, .net, .org, and other gTLDs redact personal registrant contact information for EU residents, replacing it with privacy proxy service details. Many registrars now offer free WHOIS privacy (also called domain privacy or proxy registration) that hides registrant personal data from all public WHOIS queries.

RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) is the modern successor to WHOIS, providing structured JSON responses, better internationalization support, and differential access levels for authenticated queries. Our tool queries both WHOIS and RDAP sources to provide the most complete registration data available.

Common Use Cases
1

Check domain expiration dates

Verify when a domain expires to plan renewal or monitor competitor domain availability.

2

Identify domain registrar and name servers

Find where a domain is registered and which DNS provider manages its records for transfer or support purposes.

3

Research domain ownership history

Look up registration dates and registrant organization to understand a domain's ownership history and age.

4

Investigate suspicious domains

Check registration date, registrar, and country of registration for domains associated with phishing or spam reports.

How to Use
  1. 1

Enter the domain or IP to query

Type a domain name (example.com), IP address, or ASN number in the search field and press Lookup.

  2. 2

    View registration details

See formatted WHOIS data including registrar, registration date, expiration date, updated date, name servers, and DNSSEC status.

  3. 3

    Check domain status codes

Review domain status codes (EPP codes) to understand any locks or flags on the domain that affect transferability or deletion protection.

Features
  • Domain and IP WHOIS support

Queries WHOIS records for domain names, IPv4/IPv6 addresses, and ASNs using the appropriate registry database.

  • Formatted result display

Parses raw WHOIS text into structured fields — registrar, dates, name servers, status — for easy reading without raw text parsing.

  • Domain status code explanation

Translates EPP domain status codes into plain English explanations so you understand what each status means for domain management.

  • RDAP fallback

Falls back to RDAP (Registration Data Access Protocol) when the standard WHOIS server returns incomplete or unavailable data.
