About

Text Analysis: Word Count, Readability, and Keyword Density

Word count is a fundamental metric in professional writing, academic submission, SEO content strategy, and contract work priced by word. A 'word' is typically defined as any sequence of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces — though edge cases like hyphenated compounds ('state-of-the-art'), contractions ('don't'), and abbreviations with periods ('U.S.A.') are handled differently by different counting tools. Our tool counts by whitespace-delimited tokens, which matches the convention used by Microsoft Word, Google Docs, and most academic submission systems.

Character count is relevant for social media posts (Twitter/X: 280, Instagram captions: 2,200), SMS messages, meta descriptions (120-160 chars), and title tags (50-60 chars). Two character counts are commonly needed: with spaces (total typing effort) and without spaces (information density metric).

Readability metrics like Flesch-Kincaid Reading Ease and Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level analyze sentence length and syllable count to estimate the education level required to understand a text. These are widely used in content optimization — simpler text (Grade 6-8) generally performs better for general web audiences, while technical documentation may appropriately target higher grade levels.

Check how many times target keywords appear and their frequency percentage for on-page SEO optimization.

4

Estimate reading time

Calculate approximate reading time for articles, reports, and web pages to set realistic reader expectations.
